Hot Springs by Train: Hyogo Arima Onsen — Japan’s Three Ancient Hot Springs & Three Most Renowned Springs.

Soak, Savor, and Unwind at Arima Onsen

Looking for an easy, enjoyable hot spring getaway with friends or family? Toretabi picks the best destinations you can reach by train, along with must-do experiences at each one.

Tucked away in the mountains behind Kobe, Arima Onsen has long been the retreat of choice for Japan’s elite. Even the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the warlords to unify Japan, was a devoted patron. Today, visitors can hop between the famous outdoor baths known as the Kinsen (Gold Spring) and Ginsen (Silver Spring), settle in for a leisurely stay at a traditional inn, or ride the Rokko-Arima Ropeway up to the summit for sweeping views of the Rokko mountains and the cityscape of Kobe stretching out below.

Getting to Arima Onsen

From JR Shin-Osaka Station, it’s 34.4 km to JR Sannomiya Station, and takes about 28 minutes on the New Rapid (Shin-kaisoku) service. From Sannomiya, a bus ride of approximately 30 minutes brings you right to Arima Onsen.

The New Rapid services running throughout the Keihanshin area are primarily operated by Series 223 and Series 225 trains. These models have won the Good Design Award for their uncompromising approach to safety, featuring enhanced front-collision protection and reinforced interior space to safeguard passengers in the event of impact.

How to Enjoy Arima Onsen, Hyogo Prefecture

Stay | Arima Onsen Gekkoen

Soak in private-source red spring water, with breathtaking views to match!

Arima Onsen is celebrated for two very distinct types of spring water. The Kinsen (Gold Spring) is a rich reddish-brown water loaded with iron and salt minerals, while the Ginsen (Silver Spring) is clear and colorless, renowned for leaving skin noticeably smooth and silky. Public bathhouses — the Kin no Yu (Gold Bath) and Gin no Yu (Silver Bath) — make it easy for day visitors to experience both. The hot spring town itself has seven natural spring sources, including the Tenjin Sengen, and strolling the streets while watching plumes of white steam puffing from the chimneys is one of Arima’s most charming, distinctly local pleasures.

Arima Onsen Gekkoen is one of the rare inns in Arima to draw directly from its own private spring source. The highlight is the signature open-air gold spring bath, said to have healing properties for a wide range of ailments. Set on a hilltop well away from the bustle of the hot spring town, the inn’s guest rooms command majestic views of mountain ridgelines in every direction.

Seasonal cuisine featuring the finest seafood from Akashi and mountain ingredients from Tanba

The view from the open-air bath changes with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to vibrant foliage in autumn, stretching across the slopes of Rakuyozan Mountain. Meals are served in the privacy of your own room, one course at a time, in true ‘heya-shoku’ (in-room dining) style. The menu celebrates the very best of the region: world-renowned Kobe beef, fresh seafood from Akashi, and seasonal mountain produce from the Tanba highlands.

Experience | Rokko-Arima Ropeway

Ride to the summit with sweeping mountain views unfolding beneath you.

The Rokko-Arima Ropeway links Arima Onsen Station and Rokko Sancho (Summit) Station in just 12 minutes, immersing riders in the dynamic natural scenery of the Rokko mountains along the way.

The ‘New Gondola,’ introduced in 2020, features expansive glass panels that bring the spectacular mountain landscape dramatically close. To the east, the highest peak in the Rokko range rises to 931 meters; to the west, on clear days, the Seto Inland Sea glimmers in the distance through the valley.
From late April, fresh spring greenery creates stunning gradient hues across the layered mountain terrain.

At the summit, Rokko Garden Terrace (which is free to enter) offers a cluster of restaurants and shops, with a panoramic viewing spot that takes in the Akashi Strait, the Osaka Plain, and even Kansai International Airport on a clear day.

Eat | Arima bouten bécassine

Opened in August 2023, this charming takeaway shop specializes in Japanese tea and traditional sweets.

The top seller by far is the melt-in-your-mouth mitarashi dango (dumplings) (¥550 for two skewers). Made with carefully selected, premium ingredients and nothing superfluous, the dumplings are extraordinarily soft, almost dissolving on the tongue. Each order is prepared fresh on the spot, so you’re always getting them at their very best.

Also worth trying: the Arima Sansho Mitarashi Dango, which makes generous use of Arima sansho (Japanese pepper) from the long-running local producer Kawakami Shoten. Freshly ground sansho is sprinkled on just before handing over each order, releasing a wonderfully aromatic fragrance and a satisfying tingle of spice.

The No. 1 bestseller: ‘Melt-in-Your-Mouth Mitarashi Dango’ (2 skewers / ¥550)

The Matcha Arima Cider is a special drink created in homage to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whose legacy is deeply entwined with this spa town. The brisk and strongly sparkling Arima cider is dusted with gold flakes, then topped tableside with a cup of freshly whisked premium matcha from a renowned Kyoto tea house. The result is a uniquely Japanese beverage where the deep, earthy richness of matcha meets the bright refreshment of soda.

Take a seat on the open terrace for a relaxed break or pick up your order and stroll through the streets. Either way, it’s the perfect stop whatever your travel style.
