The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival held on the islands and ports of the Seto Inland Sea. It began in 2010 with the theme of “Restoration of the Sea,” aiming to bring vitality back to the islands of Setouchi. Since then, it has been held every three years, with the sixth festival scheduled for 2025. It will be held over a total of 107 days, divided into three periods: spring, summer, and fall.

It is also notable that artists from both Japan and abroad take part, with some works created in collaboration with local residents. Each festival is crowded with over one million visitors.

The venues are located in 17 areas on islands and coasts, including the area around Takamatsu Port, considered to be the gateway to the Shikoku region, as well as Naoshima, a key point for maritime traffic since ancient times, and Shodoshima, also known as the “Olive Island.” Some areas, such as Sanuki City and Utazu Town in Kagawa Prefecture, will join the venue from 2025.

Many of the works are scattered around various outdoor locations and can be viewed at any time, such as the sculpture “Waiting for / Mr. Inland Sea” (Jun Homma) in front of Takamatsu Station, which resembles a person on the island, and the attraction is that the works can be enjoyed while walking around. They let visitors experience the beautiful nature and rich culture of the region through art.

Even outside of the event period, local activities and events through art are held, and official tours are also available, where guides will take you through the highlights of the works and the charms of the islands.
