Hot springs with over a century of history
Uchinomaki Onsen lies in the caldera, surrounded by a ring of mountains. It is a quintessential hot-spring town, one of the best in Aso, and boasts an abundance of high-quality hot-spring water. It is also a perfect place to stay if you are sightseeing in Aso. Uchinomaki Onsen is famous as a hot-spring area in which many great literary masters have stayed, including Natsume Soseki, and husband and wife Yosano Tekkan and Akiko. The slightly hot waters are colorless and transparent, and can also be drunk.
Some of the waters of Uchinomaki Onsen are sulfate springs, and it is said that they can encourage skin regeneration. There are also hot-springs that contain moisturizing components that are said to be gentle on your skin.
A tour of public hot-spring baths, known as machiyu, is a popular activity at Uchinomaki Onsen. Even now, there are six of these public baths, beloved by the local people as places to relax. Try experiencing a cherished Japanese custom as you are soothed by the natural world of Aso.
