Great Stuff to See and Do!

An aquarium... but in a unique location on top of a mountain!

To the northeast of Takamatsu City in Kagawa Prefecture lies a large, roof-shaped plateau called Yashima (the kanji for Yashima literally mean “roof” and “island”). This rare landform was formed by lava flows, and has been designated as a national historic site and natural monument. On top of the mount is New Yashima Aquarium, whose appeal lies both in its unique location at an altitude of approx. 300m and also in its exhibits that emphasize interaction.

The facility has about 80 aquariums of various sizes, and you’ll be able to see the ecology of about 1,000 fish, aquatic mammals, amphibians, and other creatures across about 130 species, ranging from cold water to tropical water. Rare creatures such as the pirarucu, the giant Amazonian fish, are also on display.

Another very popular sight is of one of the seals holding an umbrella. The seal deftly holds the umbrella between its front paws, and this adorable sight has become a hot topic on social media. It can be seen at the live seal performances that are held several times a day. The aquarium also has plenty of other events, such as feeding times, where you can watch the manatees eating, and live performances where dolphins show off their special skills. For a weekend-only event, you can experience actually feeding the sea turtles.

There are also other nearby sightseeing spots that are worth checking out

Yashima is also home to Yashima-ji Temple, the 84th temple of the 88 sacred places of Shikoku, as well as ancient ruins such as the remains of Yashima Castle, so you can enjoy sightseeing as well. The views from the top of the mountain are particularly spectacular, including of the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Takamatsu City, and the Sanuki Mountains. Yashima’s hiking and cycling are also recommended.
